In the middle of July I had the pleasure of photographing the Middlebury Language Schools programs for a few days. This was a unique experience because of the eight schools I photographed during the week (Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish) all the students had taken a language pledge which meant I was not able to speak to a single one! Instead I would gesture with the camera to make sure they were comfortable having their photo taken and then shoot away. I shot a huge diversity of activities from classes, study groups, a Japanese tea ceremony, a Calligraphy class, a few choir rehearsals (in various languages!), and Tai Chi. It was fun to see so many different activities and hear so many different languages spoken – it’s such a neat program! The team that I worked with was wonderful ferrying me around campus on a golfcart and helping bridge the gap and introduce me to each group as needed. Thanks for a great week!
