When I was in Austin visiting my friend Alyssa and her family we found a recipe for the Golden Nugget – a burger which has a slice of cheese inside. Excuse the crummy photo but it shows the glory of the nugget šŸ™‚ This recipe takes a bit more time than just slapping a plain old burger on the grill but it is well worth it. Alyssa shared the recipe and I had it again over Memorial Day to introduce to Jeff and Giles – they highly approved šŸ™‚ It’s perfect for a Sunday night dinner!

Gold Nugget Burger

1 1/2 lbs. ground beef sirloin/chuck

Salt & Pepper

Cheddar Cheese

Guacamole

Red Onion (Peeled and cut into 1/2″ slices (grilled if desired))

Iceberg Lettuce

Tomato Slices

In a bowl mix the beef, salt, and pepper and shape into 8 patties. Top 4 patties with 2 slices of cheese and lay remaining patties on top. Press edges to seal.

Grill over medium-high heat, turning once, about 7 minutes for medium rare. Spread sweet & spicy sauce (ingredients and instructions below) sauce on bottom bun, add lettuce and tomato. Then burger, onion, and guacamole. Enjoy šŸ™‚

Sweet and Spicy Sauce

3/4 c. ketchup

1/2 c. OJ

1/4 c. worcestershire

1/4 c. raisins

1 T. garlic, minced

2 T. lime juice

1/2 t. cayenne

Combine all ingredients in a pan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, reduce to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring often, until sauce thickens and is reduced to 1 cup – about 20 minutes.

If you’d prefer a smooth sauce puree in blender until smooth
