Acadia Travel Suggestions

August 9, 2013

The last week of July before Mallie & Stu’s wedding Jeff and I headed up to Mount Desert Island a few days early – boy am I glad we did! We had thought about it for ages but were trying to figure out logistics – the week before we finally decided to do it so I consulted my favorite travel app (posting a message on Facebook and waiting for recommendations to roll in….which they did) and off we went!

An old high school friend who lives on MDI recommended the Cromwell Harbor Hotel which ended up being perfect – spacious clean rooms within walking distance to town. We stayed there three nights and then moved over to the Best Western. The first morning we slept in and then rolled out of bed and over to Cafe This Way which was DELICIOUS – service was wonderful and food was exceptional. With full bellies we headed into Acadia National Park and hiked up the northern trail on Cadillac Mountain. It wasn’t particularly difficult and provided beautiful views along the way….and lots of fresh blueberries! The top is a bit of a zoo as you can also drive your car up but it’s still beautiful and worth it. We took the gorge trail down which was a very different type of scenic but lovely.
After hiking we enjoyed some lobsters and steamers in a late lunch at Abel’s Lobster Pound which was great and nice and quiet since we went at off hours.

That night at low tide we walked across to Bar Island and up to the overlook looking back to Bar Harbor – a fun before dinner activity.

The next morning we dined at Two Cats for breakfast which had good food but slow service – good to try something different but we preferred Cafe. We then headed up Penobscott Mountain which had been recommended to us by Mallie’s sister Amo – a GREAT suggestion.
Beautiful views on the way up
Looking back onto Jordan Pond

At the top of Penobscott you can continue on to Sargent Mountain and swim in this pond along the way – what a highlight!
On the way down Jeff wanted to go on a steeper trail (Jordan Cliffs) so I walked partially back on the gravel carriage road – definitely more my speed! We met at the Jordan Pond House and continued into town for some ice cream….yum! That night we went back to Cafe This Way for a spectacular dinner and then walked through town as the sun set – yes please!!
On Friday we woke up to pouring rain so we headed out for an early lunch to beat the crowds. What to eat when you’re in Maine? A lobster! A friend had recommended Thurstons Lobster Pound so we journeyed over to Bernard and split a FOUR POUND LOBSTER – it was a bit crazy but a very fun Maine memory! That night I photographed Mallie & Stu’s rehearsal dinner and headed to bed early to rest up for their wedding.
While I was at the wedding Jeff happily undertook a 32 mile bike ride all around the loop road in Acadia and finished with the climb (by bike this time) up Cadillac Mountain – he was a very happy camper!
Made it to the top!
On Sunday morning we grabbed food from the continental breakfast at Best Western and rode into the park to enjoy our last meal by the ocean – what a great end to a great trip!
