All Souls Dedication

October 16, 2007

When I was in Vermont I had the opportunity to photograph the dedication of the new sanctuary at All Souls Interfaith Gathering. The sanctuary was recently completed as an expansion of the Channing House. With views of the lake and woods from all the windows it is certainly an inspirational space.

Leaders from a diverse range of local worship groups came together to dedicate the space. Here a participant from the Abenaki Tribe performs a Native American Smugdging Ceremony where herbs and plants are burned so the smoke can carry spiritual thoughts upward

Each of the principals was given a flower as thanks for their hard work during the building process

Love the contrast here

The congregation stood and blessed each direction – finally blessing the sky. I was standing taking pictures when all of a sudden they said “we will bless the north” and everyone turned to face me. Yikes! I quickly crouched down behind the chairs 🙂

The inside of the structure has soaring ceilings and beautiful woodwork. The purple band changed to a rainbow of colors at the end of the ceremony
