One of the requests from my 1000 Post Blog Survey was for more postings on my volunteer work (and specifically the Junior League). This is my 3rd year in the Junior League of Hartford and it’s been a great experience so far!
I joined the league to do volunteer work and meet new people and it has allowed me to do both! Your first year you are a “Provisional” and along with your classmates get an overview and introduction to the league. Each subsequent year you serve on a committee.
I’ve been on the Backpack Committee
for the past two years and have enjoyed the work I’ve done on behalf of this fabulous program.
A blurb about the program:
The Backpack Program provides nondescript backpacks filled with child-friendly, nonperishable and nutritionally balanced meals to children and their families. Every weekend during the school year, an enrolled child receives food for six meals, two snacks and one full meal for their entire family. The students enrolled in the Backpack Program receive school-provided, free and reduced breakfast and lunch during the school week. Yet, when they are not in school, these children have little access to food. The backpacks fill the food gap between Friday afternoon and Monday morning.
Recently my committee completed our shift at The Clothes Horse which is a re-sale shop in West Hartford. Each year every member is required to do a three hour shift at the store so we decided it would be fun to all do it together!
Cindy vacuumed and dusted upstairs while we sorted clothes downstairs (first by type and then by color!) There are some great clothes for sale….and some “gems” as well!
The ladies pause for a photo 🙂
And the whole group gathers right before we headed out for the night!
If you live in the Hartford area and have never been to the Clothes Horse
stop by – there are some beautiful clothes and some fabulous deals to be had!
