Walk Against Hunger

April 1, 2010

On Sunday, May 2nd I’m participating in the Walk Against Hunger.

Each year in the greater Hartford area 128,000 people seek food assistance from food pantries, shelters and community kitchens…and roughly 50,000 of those needing help are children!

In July 2010 the Junior League of Hartford (an organization that I’m an enthusiastic member of) along with the Chrysalis Center and Foodshare, will open Freshplace – an innovative 2,000 square foot food pantry in Hartford’s Upper Albany neighborhood. Freshplace will provide:

  • Fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products in addition to pantry staples
  • Client-choice based selections to accommodate the health, cultural, religious and familial needs of those that are hungry.
  • Comprehensive intake and referral services, increasing access to food stamps, health and crisis intervention programs, public assistance, and educational services.
  • A community hub and resource, assisting in the revitalization of Upper Albany, supporting the network of existing area food pantries, and creating a center for community involvement.

Freshplace has been accepted as a Benefiting Agency for the Walk Against Hunger this year. As such, we earn money every time someone makes a pledge to the Walk and designates Freshplace as their agency of choice. The League has set an overall goal of $20,000 and the team I’m captaining “The Freshplace Fans” has a goal of $2,500 (my personal goal is $500 which I hope to well exceed!).

I’ve never done a fundraising walk or run of this nature before but it’s a cause I’m passionate about and I hope you’ll join me. Even if you only give $10 or $20 it will help – thank you in advance – I really really (no REALLY!) appreciate your support.
